Oceanographic and Acoustic Data for a Shelfbreak Front, New England Continental Shelf, Northwest Atlantic, from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)Entry ID: CMO_WHOI_SHELF_PRIMER
Abstract: As a primer to the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) Program, Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) carried out an acoustic and
oceanographic experiment of the New England shelfbreak front. The
experiment, known as the New England Shelfbreak Front Primer, is also
known as the Sound Propagation from the Continental Slope to the
Continental Shelf Primer.
The experiment took place from July ... 1996 through August 1996 and was
located 80 miles southeast of Montauk, Long Island, and 60 miles south
of Martha's Vineyard.
The purpose of the research was to study the acoustical and
oceanographic properties of shelfbreak fronts. The acoustics portion
of this experiment consisted of three components: 1) a moored acoustic
transmission array, or "tomography array", 2) a moored physical
oceanography array, which provided detailed time series of the
oceanographic conditions along the major acoustic path, as well as
providing useful information for the physical oceanography efforts,
and 3) a broadband (SUS shot) source component, which provided a
diversity of sound frequencies and source locations for various sound
The tomography array consisted of two vertical line arrays (VLA's)
positioned at the northeast and northwest corners of the experimental
site, and four sound sources to the south.
A number of oceanographic sensors were deployed on the acoustic source
and receiver moorings and on a line of moorings on the western edge of
the experimental area (in a N/S line). These sensors included:
temperature pods and thermistor strings, Sea Cats (temperature and
salinity sensors), an upward looking ADCP, and a pressure sensor.
The broadband source (SUS/shot) was deployed on July 27th, 1996.
Lines of SUS charges were dropped in the area by aircraft, and were
successfully monitored by the VLA's.
The overall objective of the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) research
was to determine how particles and optical properties respond to
physical forcing under various oceanic conditions on a broad
continental shelf off the east coast of the U.S.

participants in the ONR-sponsored CMO program. The contents of the
site include raw data and preliminary analyses which, pending
publication, are considered properietary by the program
participants. The ... availability of these data and analyses on the web
site does not imply permission for anyone outside the program to use
these data. Permission must be obtained from ONR and the individual
investigator before anyone uses these data for research purposes
outside the scope of the CMO program.
All data are preliminary and subject to change as a result of ongoing
processing and quality control.
