Abstract: Climate Reference Network (CRN) is digital data set DSI-3286, archived at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). This data set contains hourly observations, made by an automated instrument package, of US surface meteorological data at stations that are specifically included for their representation of the climate of the United States of America. Observations are made by an automated instrument ... package, transmitted to a GOES satellite which in turn transmits the data to Wallops Island, VA. NCDC retrieves the data from Wallops Island using Local Readout Ground Station (LRGS) software. Wallops Island also sends the CRN data to the National Weather Service Telecommunications Gateway (NWSTG), which posts the data on the NWS Gateway. Each CRN station will measure temperature and precipitation. In addition, wind speed at thermometer height and solar radiation will be measured to establish rigorous transfer functions relating the CRN measurements to historical temperature data recorded at nearby stations in other networks that have long-term records. Soil moisture and soil temperature will be measured using sensors provided by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Re: Revision of the Daily01 Product
The Daily01 product, also known as SXXX91 CRND01, provides a
user with a summary table of daily climate variables for the U.S.
Climate Reference Network ... (USCRN) stations. This product has
undergone an emergency revision due to the discovery of an offset
between the intended day period of local midnight-to-midnight and
the time period actually used for calculating daily values, local
4 AM-to-4 AM. This condition existed from April 2009 until
mid-October 2009 in all transmitted or archived daily Update files.
This problem also impacted station-year files and previous network
wide data snapshots. In correcting this issue, the opportunity was
taken to make several other technical corrections and improvements.
- In addition to the main correction above, the time frame used to
look for station updates was also corrected.
- Update file rows are now ordered according to station wban
number designations. This makes manually locating a particular
station in an update file easier.
- Update files omit stations that are not active. This prevents
rows of missing values from being displayed for stations which are
not on record. Stations that are on record but have not provided
enough observations to calculate daily values will continue to be
represented by missing value indicators.
- Update files are restricted to the two most recent days to
avoid overloading users with older updates that are best found by
downloading station-year files through FTP. Any changes in data
prior to the two most recent days must be found in the YEAR
subdirectories at the URL provided below.
Any previous versions of the Daily01 product (SXXX91 CRND01) data
are considered by NCDC to be obsolete and unsuitable for
scientific uses. Regenerated USCRN daily data files ordered by
year and station can be found at the URL provided below:
This condition does not affect daily data extracted directly
from the Web-based USCRN observation reports, nor those daily data
accessible through the NCDC QCLCD product or Climate Data Online.
