TOVS Raw Counts With Calibration and Location DataEntry ID: SN-21A
Abstract: This set of raw data was supplied by NOAA through NCAR on tape
cartridges. It contains raw counts measured by the three TIROS
Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS) instruments on board the TIROS-N
and NOAA 6, 7, 8, and 9 spacecraft. Measurements were made at twenty
IR wavelengths including the 4.3 and 15 micron bands (HIRS/2); three
15 micron bands (SSU); and four 50+ GHz bands (MSU). There are ... also
earth location and calibration information. Each cartridge contains
about 1-1/2 days of data.
The High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS/2) sensor is a 20
channel instrument that measures primarily infrared radiation. It is
designed to provide information on the temperature profile of the
lower atmosphere, water vapor content and ozone concentrations. The
Stratospheric Sounding Unit (SSU) is a 3 channel instrument that
measures the radiation emitted by carbon dioxide gas at three
different levels in the upper atmosphere. Weighting functions are
determined from these measurements to determine the temperature
profile of the upper atmosphere (25-50km). The Microwave Sounding
Unit (MSU) is a 4 channel sensor that passively measures radiation in
the 5.5mm oxygen region for the purpose alleviating the influence of
clouds on the 4.3 and 15 micron sounding channels.
