Radarsat SAR and NOAA AVHRR Imagery for the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) Program, available from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics LaboratoryEntry ID: CMO_JHUAPL_RADARSAT_AVHRR
Abstract: With an Application Development and Research Opportunity (ADRO) grant
from the Canadian Space Agency, the Johns Hopkins University Applied
Physics Lab acquired and processed SAR imagery from the RADARSAT
satellite for the time period May 19, 1996 to August 11, 1997. The
study area was the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) area in the
... Mid-Atlantic Bight, 80 miles southeast of Montauk Point, Long Island,
and 60 miles south of Martha's Vinyard.
Twenty-two RADARSAT scenes were processed. Each image was collected
using either the RADARSAT Wide-1 (W1) or Wide-2 (W2) imaging modes
from both ascending and descending orbits.
For comparison, NOAA AVHRR imagery was collected and processed into
sea surface temperature imagery by JHU APL. AVHRR scenes were
collected that occurred nearest in time to the SAR image and at least
partially cloud free for the same study area.
In addition, in-situ environmental observations were compiled for the
time periods during SAR overpasses. Air temperature, water
temperature, air-sea temperature, wind speed and wind direction were
made available from buoys of the National Data Buoy Center for the
three NDBC buoys closest to the CMO study area: Long Island, Buzzard's
Bay, and Nantucket Island. Also, observed hourly tide height was
obtained from NOAA tide stations at Montauk, NY, and Nantucket, MA.
These in-situ data are available for the time period May 19, 1996 to
Sept. 27, 1996.
This work was part of the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) program of
the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

Use Constraints The JHU APL web site of the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) program is
maintained for the use of participants in the ONR-sponsored CMO
program. The contents of the site include raw data and preliminary
analyses which, pending publication, are considered properietary by
the program participants. The availability of these data and analyses
on the web site does not imply permission for anyone outside the
program to use these data. Permission must be obtained from ONR and
the individual investigator before anyone uses these data for research
purposes outside the scope of the CMO program.
