Summary

Abstract: Results of assay for M. cerebralis myxospores by digest wild juvenile salmonids recovered in the Clackamas River (OR) basin.

Purpose: To determine if Myxobolus cerebralis was already established in the Clackamas River system.

Description: Juvenile rainbow (n=29), steelhead (n=38 and cutthroat (O. clarki, n=2) trout and Chinook salmon (n=1) were collected from locations above (Rkm 33, n=12; Rkm 31.8, n=22) and below (Rkm 13.9, n=18; Rkm 3.0, n=15; Rkm 0, n=3) the hatchery in Clear Creek in February 2002 by ODFW. Juvenile trout and salmon were collected from the Clackamas River basin, including Clear Creek, in 2002-05 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as part of the Wild Fish Health Survey (http://www.fws.gov/wildfishsurvey/). From Clear Creek, these included: 1 steelhead trout (O. mykiss), 2 Spring Chinook salmon and 2 coho salmon (O. kisutch). Fish were also collected from Eagle Creek (32 cutthroat trout, 35 steelhead, 2 coho salmon), Deep Creek (1 steelhead, 5 coho salmon), Oak Grove Fork Clackamas River (2 cutthroat trout, 31 steelhead), Fish Creek (34 steelhead), Little Crater Creek (60 kokanee O. nerka, 12 brown trout Salmon trutta) and the North Fork Clackamas River (60 Chinook salmon, 8 steelhead).
