Images of ice core sections that have been processed at the U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory
Entry ID:

Summary
Abstract:
The dataset is comprised of optical images of ice core sections that were acquired with a digital line-scan camera in the cold room facility at the U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL). Ice core sections are archival cuts which have are rough-out rounds of ice with a single plane cut along one side. Illumation is provided to the sides of the ice section using fiberoptic light guides connected to a 1000W xenon light source. Original image resolution varies, generally in the range of 0.05 to 0.1 mm.

Quality
Ice section quality varies along the core. Most images are of archival cuts which have a rough, rounded backside that affects brightness. There is some drop off in lighting at the ends of each section.
