Changes of major ion concentrations in melting snow and terrestrial waters from northern Victoria Land, Antarctica.
Entry ID:
Ion_concentr_Victoria_Land
Summary
Abstract:
Concentrations of major ions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, Na+, K+,Mg2+, Ca2+) where
measure in melting snow and water samples from stream and lakes in ice-free areas throughout northern Victoria Land. Most ions in snow and terrestrial water are derived from the marine environment and their concentrations are extremely variable in species and time, especially in water systems without melting snow and ice. ... ![]() Geographic Coverage

Sample of melting snowbanks, stream and lake waters were collected in January
and February 2002 from ice-free areas of northern Victoria Land. Temperature, pH and conductivity were measured on the site using portable meters. Bottles were brought back to the laboratory of Terra Nova Bay and stored at 20 degrees C for transport to Italy. In the Siena University laboratories samples were melted and immediately analyzed. Analysis of Major cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+ and NH4+) and anions (Cl-, NO3- and SO42-) was carried out by ion chromatography (IC) using a Dionex DX-120 ion chromatograph.
