The Sea as major source of ions to lichens in terrestrial ecosystems of Victoria Land
Entry ID:
Ions_to_lichens_Victoria_Land
Summary
Abstract:
Lichens and mosses constitute the bulk of plant biomass in terrestrial
ecosystem of continental Antarctica. On the hypothesis that cryptogams can be used as an early warning system to detect the effects of climatic changes on environmental biochemistry, we investigated the elemental composition and the main source of soluble ions to the saxicolous lichen Umbilicaria decussata in Victoria Land. ... ![]() Geographic Coverage

U. decussata samples were collected from rock outcrops representing the main
regional lithological features. To estimate the bioavailability of ions in lichen substrata, two filter papers were laid for five minutes on rock surface near Umbilicaria stands and wet with 3 ml of deionized water. Whenever possible, 2 filters were also put on salt encrustations and sample of ... ![]()
