Annotation layer of an image in the COMET Case Study 001: The Storm of the Century (March 1993)
Entry ID:
ANNOTATED_COMET001_UCAR_369
Summary
Abstract:
Cold fronts are the easiest thing to identify in satellite images -
cold fronts can be seen by identifying areas with the intense convection, indicated by cold cloud tops, usually extending to the SW from the larger mass of clouds. Warm fronts are much more difficult to identify in satellite images, especially late in the midlatitude cyclones life, when the occluded front confuses the picture. In this case we appealed to surface data for the same cyclone, and translated a bit in time. Low pressure is where the storm takes a turn and wraps around. Most severe weather is at the cold front and the warm front. The Occluded Front is where the warm air rises above the cool air in front of it.
