GLOBSCAR: ATSR World Burned Surface AtlasEntry ID: GLOBSCAR
Due to the environmental consequences of vegetation fires on a global scale
(atmospheric emissions, greenhouse effect), regular maps of burned surfaces at
a global scale are required by the scientific community. The CEOS pilot project
Global Observation of Forest Cover (GOFC) has in particular requested the
production of 1km resolution global area burnt products using ATSR-2.
Burnt Area Assessment
-Low resolution remotely sensing: best solution for regular monitoring of the
entire earth surface.
-ATSR-2: possibility to cover the entire globe at an acceptable temporal sample
for BS detection.
The research design is based on the transfer of information on the burnt
surfaces from the Remote Sensing data to specifically designed scalar
parameters. This reduces the amount of useless data to be evaluated. More

Within the scope of an ESA announcement of opportunity (AO-329) and following
the "Development and testing of algorithms for a global burnt area product from
ERS ATSR-2" (collaboration with JRC and the University of Lisbon), the GLOBSCAR
project initiated in November 2000 with the following objectives:
-Derive a global method simple enough to run on 1km global data set, initially
for Year 2000.
-Maintain an upgraded archive of global burnt surface occurrence directly
available on the Web.
