Global island system boundary from ESRI ArcWorld database.

Summary

Abstract: Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) Island system boundary. The
Island boundary is derived from ESRI ArcWorld database. Islands less than
1.5 ha are excluded, and no islands within inland water bodies are
included. Island sub-categories include: continental state islands vs
Island States, inhabited vs uninhabited, and less than and equal to 2 km
distance from the mainland vs greater than 2 km distance from the
mainland. Islands were were designated as inhabited or uninhabited by
overlaying the GPW v 3 (beta) population data from CIESIN. Population
values between 0 and 1 were first calculated to 1.

Purpose: Delineates the spatial extent of the island system boundary for use
within the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment.
