U.S. National Poison Data System (NPDS) Annual ReportsEntry ID: NPDS_Poison
Abstract: AAPCC produces the NPDS Annual Report giving statistics and information on all the poisonings in a calendar year. The report is available to the general public to be downloaded for free and is usually made public the December following the close of a calendar year. This means the 2010 NPDS Annual Report will be released around December of 2011. You can download any of the reports linked here free of charge. <http://www.aapcc.org/dnn/NPDSPoisonData/NPDSAnnualReports.aspx>
The NPDS Annual Report has three basic sections of information: general charts and statistics, a section of individual fatality listings, and a section listing demographic profile of single-substance exposure cases by generic category.
Purpose: NPDS holds more than 50 million poison exposure case records, with more than two million new records added each year. It is also a robust and modern system - holding many types of technical medical information that is searchable in many ways. NPDS contains exposure cases dating back to 1985. Today, information and human exposure case data is continually uploaded to NPDS from all the poison ... centers in near “real time” meaning in a matter of minutes.
This data is useful in many ways. NPDS can guide clinical research on poisonings, prompt new product and medicine formulas, help provide evidence for product repackaging, recalls, bans, and over the counter status changes, product reformulation, focus poison prevention education, direct training of future medical students, and it can even detect chemical or bioterrorism incidents. Key regulatory agencies rely on NPDS data including the Centers for Disease Control, Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Drug Enforcement Agency. Our data is also most frequently used by pharmaceutical manufacturers.
