IPY: Collaborative Proposal: Constraining the Mass-Balance Deficit of the Amundsen Coast's Glaciers
Entry ID:
das_0632031
Summary
Abstract:
This award supports a project to gather data to better understand the mass balance of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet focusing on the Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers along the Amundsen Sea coast. This project is using a combination of airborne radar stratigraphy and ice-core derived accumulation measurements to create basin-averaged accumulation estimates, which coupled with InSAR velocity data will provide a decadal-scale estimate of mass balance in this region over in the past.
Purpose: These results will help constrain how coastal changes propagate inland, to allow better prediction of future change in this climatically sensitive and rapidly changing sector of West Antarctica. Comparison of the basin averaged accumulation with ice discharge determined using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) velocity data will provide improved mass-balance estimates. Study of changes in flow speed will produce a record of mass balance over the last three decades.
