Radiowave Absorption Data from the MAP/WINE Experiment at Volgograd, USSREntry ID: MAPDA-RWA112
Abstract: This data set recorded at Volgograd, USSR include values of radiowave
absorption using the A1-method at 2.2 mcps, x = 78 degrees and covers 122 days.
The observations are carried out using ground-based techniques and the
measurements are carried out under the MAP/WINE Project.
The estimates are derived using method A1 (pulse reflection method). A radio
wave reflected in the ionosphere suffers on ... its way up and down from absorption
particularly at certain height levels. If propagation is observed at oblique
incidence, the angle between the ray and the vertical varies along the path for
two reasons: first because the ionosphere is curved, second because refraction
occurs. For the vertical incidence method A1, we have to apply waves which do
not penetrate the ionosphere at vertical incidence but are reflected in one of
the ionospheric layers. Observations were carried out using standard procedure
described by Rawer (1976).
The MAP/WINE (Middle Atmosphere Program/Winter in Northern Europe) was one of
the MAP projects scheduled for Fall-Winter 1983-1984. The aim was to coordinate
observational studies of the high-latitude European middle atmosphere in
winter, leading to an improved understanding of the winter variability
structure, motions, and composition.
