Susceptibility of Tubifex tubifex to Myxobolus cerebralis infection
Entry ID:
MSU_SUS
Summary
Abstract:
Non-infected T. tubifex were collected (1999-2001) from the Rock Creek drainage and tested for their susceptibility to infection with M. cerebralis in laboratory exposures. The percentage of worms susceptible to infection was determined. A positive control was completed using a strain of highly susceptible T. tubifex (Mt. Whitney) from a fish hatchery in California. Experimentally infected T. tubifex were infected at low rates (<12%) as compared with the Mt. Whitney control (>72%).
Purpose: These data were collected in order to determine if the low rate of T. tubifex naturally infected was due to some kind of natural resistance to M. cerebralis. Rates of natural infection were compared with experimental infection. Overall, these data will be used in conjunction with other habitat assessment, temperature, habitat restoration, T. tubifex, and sentinel cage data to study transmission dynamics of whirling disease.
