Abstract:
The Database on Introduction of Aquatic Species (DIAS) contains information on introductions of freshwater and marine fish, molluscs and crustaceans. It is produced by the Fisheries Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The database includes records of species introduced or transferred from one country to another and does not consider movements of species inside the same country. Coverage of accidental introductions of organisms (e.g., through ship ballast waters) is not complete and records on this topic have been generally entered only when important impacts on fisheries or on the environment have been caused. In light of the international interest in introduced species by groups such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, NGO's and the private aquaculture sector, this database represents an important source of information on both the benefits and risks of species introductions. The following information is potentially available in the database for each introduction event: Genus and species name Country introduced to Country introduced from Year of introduction Reasons for introduction Introducer Establishment of introduced species in the wild Method of establishment of species Use as aquaculture species Type of ecological effects Type of socio-economic effects Users aware of other introductions of aquatic species not already included in the database or that have additional information on the records in the database are requested to fill in the Input Form. Access the database on the WWW: "http://www.fao.org/waicent/portal/about_en.asp" [This summary was adapted from information on the FAO/DIAS WWW page and from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission WWW pages.] |
