Summary
Abstract: Cyclone Tracks - Extratropical N. Hemisphere is a historical digital data set archived at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). The major data variables and parameters are twelve hour positions with direction and speed of movements. The extratropical cyclone movements were digitized from NMC 6-hourly northern hemisphere cyclone position maps. However, the file only contains the 12-hourly positions. A related file is 9629 (C00290) which was prepared for all pressure centers (cyclones and anti cyclones) from the Northern Hemisphere historical map series for the period January 1899 through June 1939.

Purpose: To make a wide range of climatic data available to researchers and the public.

LINEAGE/PROCESS STEP:
PROCESS DESCRIPTION: The 6-hourly positions were digitized off the NMC Northern Hemisphere cyclone charts giving a latitude and longitude. These were then converted to the common extratropical cyclone format which only gives 12-hourly positions. If a 6-hourly position fell within a different 10-degree square than the 12-hourly positions either side of its position, then a 10- degree square was added to the record. The digitized centers were plotted back at 100 percent and laid over the original charts and checked to insure the quality of the digitizing. The direction of movements and speed were then computed based on the digitized 12-hourly positions. Also computed were the 10-degree squares.
