Summary
Abstract: The "Global Tropical Cyclone ISCCP B1 Satellite Observations" (TC-B1) data consist of raw satellite observations derived from the ISCCP B1 data centered on historical tropical cyclones (TC). The data derive from the global constellation of geostationary satellites (GOES, GMS and Meteosat series) spanning 1983 through the present. The data are available at 3-hour intervals and are gridded to roughly 8km resolution. The data include infrared window, visible and other channels available from the satellite instruments. Hurricane database (HURDAT) and "best track" information (from the JTWC) were temporally-interpolated to match the satellite data resolution. The satellite data were then gridded to 8km, with grid centers fixed on the tropical cyclone center of circulation. Data include hurricanes from the North Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean Basins. Data are provided in a convenient NetCDF format which is self-documenting and follows standard storage and meta-data conventions. This data set will be updated on an as needed basis.

Purpose: To provide a comprehensive set of satellite data for worldwide tropical cyclone research.

ATTRIBUTE ACCURACY REPORT: The primary quantitative use of this data set is brightness temperatures from the IR Window Channel (IRWIN). Hence, on the accuracy of the IRWIN brightness temperatures is discussed. The calibration tested and corrected the initial ISCCP calibration. Corrections were made and are detailed by Knapp, K. R. (2007), Calibration of long-term geostationary infrared observations using HIRS, Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, Submitted. The calibration removed temporal trends or shifts in the calibration data. It did not specifically address the precision or accuracy of the data.

LOGICAL CONSISTENCY REPORT: Unknown

COMPLETENESS REPORT: Every attempt has been made to completely merge the HURDAT/"Best Track" data with the satellite imagery from ISCCP B1. Missing data generally ocurr when the original ISCCP B1 file is missing for an observation. Also, observations of tropical cyclones over the Indian Ocean are incomplete given the lack of geostationary coverage prior to 1998.

HORIZONTAL POSITIONAL ACCURACY REPORT: The horizontal positional accuracy of this data set is affected by a) satellite navigation errors and b) "best track"/HURDAT position accuracy of the storms (which includes the interpolation from the original 6h resolution to 3-hourly to match the ISCCP B1 resolution). The satellite accuracy is generally 2 pixels (~16 km), but can be larger. Thus, locations reported in the data files are generally within 16 km. The position of the storm only affects the positional accuracy insomuch as that the center pixel corresponds to the circulation center (e.g., the eye). This secondary accuracy does not affect the location calculations, but will affect such calculations as radially-averaged brightness temperatures (in this case, if the storm location is incorrect, then the radially-averged temps. will be averaged about the wrong point). This secondary error is likely less than the satellite navigation error of 16km.

LINEAGE/PROCESS STEP:
PROCESS DESCRIPTION: Interpolate Best track and HURDAT data to 3-hourly The HURDAT and best track data (hereafter collectively called best track) are available every 6 hours. The ISCCP B1 data is available at 3 hour intervals. Thus, to take advantage of the higher temporal resolution ISCCP B1 data, the best track data were interpolated. Interpolation was performed using splines to produce a smooth 3 hour product. This process is performed once when new data become available from the centers (National Hurricance Centr and JTWC).

PROCESS DESCRIPTION: Regrid ISCCP B1 data The 3-hourly tropical cyclone positions are then used to create fixed 0.07 deg latitude grids about the storm. The ISCCP B1 data are then mapped to the grid and the result is stored in a netCDF file. This is the final step in processing the data (however, it is possible to append the netCDF file later with additional information on the calibration adjustments to the ISCCP B1 data).
