Winds Aloft Charts
Entry ID:
gov.noaa.ncdc.C00111
Summary
Abstract:
Winds Aloft Charts are historical charts archived at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). These winds aloft charts (6-hourly or 12-hourly) were prepared by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and its predecessor, the National Meteorological Center, both of the U.S. National Weather Service. The charts were archived on 35-mm microfilm by the NCDC. Data contains plotted stations wind direction (36 points) and speed (knots) as wind barbs. The altitude of the plotted winds varies, almost year to year. The charts were for 03 and 15 GMT (some years had additional 09 and 21 GMT) from March 1942 to May 1957. From June 1957 to present the charts were for 00, and 12 GMT (some years had additional 06 and 18 GMT data).
Purpose: To make a wide range of climatic data available to researchers and the public. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: chart CURRENTNESS REFERENCE: Ground Condition
