Summary

Abstract: WMO 1961-90 Global Climate Normals is digital data set DSI-9641A, archived at
the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). It is also available to customers as a CD-ROM.
DSI-9641A provides the 1961- 1990 global standard climate normals data for over 4000 stations
worldwide. The data were computed by more than 135 countries and territories and were provided
as ... part of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) CLINO project activity. The data set
contains data files, documentation files, eye-readable ASCII table files, graphics files showing
which countries submitted data, and limited DOS extraction software. It also contains limited
narrative metadata files, which describe normals computational methodologies for some countries.
Climatic variables include maximum temperature, minimum temperature, mean temperature,
precipitation, snowfall, snow depth, wet bulb temperature, dew point temperature, relative
humidity, sea level pressure, vapor pressure, wind speed, wind direction, cloud cover, sunshine
duration, soil temperature, evaporation, solar radiation, number of days with various weather
elements (occurrence/ nonoccurrence), and number of days with weather parameters beyond various
threshold values. Computed statistics include mean, median, quartiles, extremes, frequency
distribution, standard deviation, and number of years with non-missing data. The normals data
and metadata that were provided vary from station to station and from country to country. The
data set was produced by NCDC in coordination with the WMO CLINO project. The CD-ROM contains
primarily ASCII table files and limited DOS extraction software. The "README.TXT" file describes
the CD-ROM and should be viewed first. Special Note Regarding Hard Copy Publication: The NCDC
neither publishes nor distributes hard copy subsets of the data contained on the CD-ROM.
However, a subset of the information on the CD has been published by the WMO under the title:
"Climatological Normals (CLINO) for the Period 1961-1990, WMO-No. 847." This publication does
not contain as much information and data as appear on the CD-ROM, however. By agreement between
the WMO and the American Meteorological Society (AMS), residents of the United States and Canada
may obtain the "Climatological Normals (CLINO) for the Period 1961-1990, WMO-No. 847"
publication from the AMS: American Meteorological Society WMO Publications Center 45 Beacon
Street Boston, MA 02108 USA.
