Abstract: Global Synoptic Surface Observations is historical digital data set DSI-9685, archived at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). Major parameters which make up this file include time, sky cover, wind direction and speed, visibility, present and past weather, sea level pressure, pressure tendency and change, dry bulb and dew point temperature, clouds, precipitation amount, and supplemental ... codes. This data file contains three-hourly synoptic observations starting January 1, 1967. The observations are identified by the WMO block/station index number. In June 1966 NCDC, National Climatic Data Center, AF Global Weather Central and Fleet Numerical Weather Central agreed to create and maintain a synoptic data file at NCDC. Original observations from Air Force DATSAV file and the NMC synoptic file are combined to form this file. A limited amount of editing is done as the file is built. The file is presently not updated on a regular basis. In June 1966, NCDC, U.S. Air Force Global Weather Center, and U.S. Navy FNOC agreed to create and maintain a synoptic data file at NCDC. Original observations from the U.S. Air Force DATSAV file (C00442) and the NMC (NWS) GTS surface synoptic files (C00219) are reformatted and combined to form this file. Automated quality control was accomplished by the respective organizations and the NCDC accepted these data on mag. tape as correct during reformatting procedures. The NCDC cannot guarantee the number of observations available for a particular station. Data after 1980 can be retrieved from the U.S. Air Force DATSAV and put into the DSI-9685 format on demand.
