Summary
Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The GOES Surface and Insolation Products (GSIP) is a high spatial resolution (1/8 x 1/8 degrees) solar radiation product estimated from the GOES-East and -West Imager radiance measurements hourly for the Extended Northern Hemisphere scan sector and every three hours for the Full Disk scan sector. The products contain upwelling and downwelling shortwave (0.2-4.0 micrometers) and visible ... (0.4-0.7 micrometers) radiative fluxes at the top of the atmosphere and at the surface, cloud fraction and skin temperature. In addition to these primary products, cloud phase, visible cloud optical depth, outgoing longwave radiation, as well as derived byproducts (composite clear and cloudy reflectances) and ancillary data (total column amounts of water vapor and ozone) are also included. Compared with the earlier GSIP-CONUS product, the new GSIP products offer an improved accuracy and higher resolution insolation data for domains covering portions of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. These improvements offer better estimates of coral bleaching and provide the high-resolution data needed for validation and forcing of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) surface physics. ATTRIBUTE ACCURACY REPORT: Based on the analyses of a year-worth of data, the accuracy of instantaneous SW surface downward flux (insolation) is -80, +60 W/m2 with root mean square errors of 60-140 W/m2. Accuracy of monthly averages are -10 W/m2 over land and 5-20 W/m2 over water. The monthly root mean square errors of are 5-25 W/m2, depending on location. LOGICAL CONSISTENCY REPORT: ... The algorithm estimates the top of atmosphere and surface flux densities so that the energy in the surface-atmosphere system is conserved. The fluxes estimated this way are radiatively consistent with the satellite observations and the ancillary information on atmospheric gases use in the retrieval. Evaluation of the algorithm is performed by comparing the SW and visible surface downward flux retrievals to high quality ground data sets over land and platform and buoy measurements over water. NOTE: The products "LW downward surface radiative flux" and "LW upward surface radiative flux" have not been fully evaluated and thus they are considered only DEVELOPMENTAL PRODUCTS. The Radiative Temperature product is an intermediate product and has not been directly evaluated. COMPLETENESS REPORT: The algorithm generates products every hour for the extended hemispheres and every three hours for the full-disk scans. Shortwave fluxes are produced only during daytime, and only when the cosine of the solar zenith angle is greater than 0.2. LINEAGE/PROCESS STEP: PROCESS DESCRIPTION: Every hour, GOES Imager AREA files are transferred to a local LINUX workstation. Next, a clear composite image is created by comparing every 1-km pixel of the current visible (channel 1) image to corresponding pixels in the images from the previous 28 days, and by selecting the darkest (with the lowest digital count) pixel from the sequence. In addition to the satellite data, forecast model data from the NCEP GFS server is transferred to the local LINUX workstation four times per day at 05:00, 10:00, 16:00 and 22:00 UTC. The 6-hourly GFS data are temporally and spatially interpolated to match the times of satellite observations and the spatial resolution and domain of GSIP. The IMS snow data are acquired once per day at 23 UTC and are re-mapped to the GSIP grid and merged with snow information from GFS. After all input and ancillary fields are ready, the system analyses pixel data in all five channels for the presence of clouds; pixels so identified are flagged. The pixel-level radiances in all five channels are then averaged into 1/8 x 1/8 degree grid cells, the cloud fraction, the dominant cloud type and cloud liquid water/ice path in each cell is determined. This is followed by the estimation of radiative fluxes and skin temperature in each grid cell; the gridded results are then written out into a file.
