Precipitation Chemistry at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF)Entry ID: HUBBARD_BROOK_PRECIP_CHEM
Abstract: The Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) is a 3,160 hectare
reserve dedicated to the long-term study of forest and stream
ecosystems. Located in the White Mountain National Forest of New
Hampshire, the HBEF was established in 1955 and is operated by the
USDA Forest Service, Northeastern Forest Experiment Station.
Six adjacent watersheds on a south-facing slope and two adjacent
watersheds on a ... north-facing slope have been equipped to measure the
amount and chemistry of water. Precipitation collectors are maintained
and sampled weekly at 21 locations. At the bottom of each watershed,
the stream flows over a V-notch weir, thus measuring streamflow
continuously throughout the year.
The Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF), a Long-Term Ecological
Research (LTER) Project site in New Hampshire consists primarily of
eastern deciduous forest. HBEF research topics include vegetation
structure and production; dynamics of detritus in terrestrial and
aquatic ecosystems; atmosphere-terrestrial-aquatic ecosystem linkages;
heterotroph population dynamics; and effects of human activities on
This dataset includes precipitation chemistry data from samples
collected and analyzed as part of the National Atmospheric
Deposition Program (NADP)/National Trends Network (NTN). NADP
samples are collected weekly and mailed to a central analytical
laboratory in Illinois. Precipitation samples are collected in
wet/dry linear polyethlyene buckets. The samples are collected only
on the "wet" side of the bucket during precipitation events. The
samples are analyzed and quality controlled under NADP
guidelines. The samples measured include calcium (Ca), magnesium
(Mg), potassium (K), sodium (Na), ammonium (NH4), nitrate (NO3),
chlorine (Cl), sulfate (SO4), phosphate (PO4), and pH.
