Summary
Abstract: Zooplankton was collected from the Canadian Beaufort Sea shelf in May, (ice on), and July to September (open water) of 1986. In May, four Wisconsin net samples were collected from two stations. In July to September, 89, 88 and 181 net samples were collected with neuston, 85 µm bongo and 500 µm bongo gear, respectively, from 49 stations. Neuston gear sampled at the water surface while other gear sampled the water column. There were 247 taxonomic identifications from 30 taxonomic groups (phyla, classes, orders or suborders). The resulting database consists of 11091 data rows and is app. 6MB in size. Copepods predominated a total catch of 33.66 million specimens. Wet and dry biomass data by taxonomic group are given for neuston and 500 µm bongo net samples. Respective maximum wet and dry sample biomass for neuston samples was 44.15 and 5.52 g/100 m3 water filtered, and for bongo samples, 123.72 and 36.00 g/100m3. Length-frequency and sample caloric density data are given respectively, for copepod species captured in 23 samples, and nine samples, from 500 µm bongo nets.

Purpose: To assess species composition, abundance, distribution and biomass of zooplankton across the Canadian Beaufort

Quality
ATTRIBUTE ACCURACY REPORT: Samples identified with the aid of reference texts, keys and collections, and verified as required. Sorting and counting techniques were different for each sampling gear. Taxonomists, assigned to the task of identification and counting of taxonomic groups, continued with the task until all samples were processed. A DH6 aircraft equipped with wheel skis was used during May for sampling from the ice surface. The MV Sequel , a wooden hulled 12 m vessel was chartered to conduct sampling during the open water period. During May, station coordinates were determined with a Global Navigation System on the aircraft. During the open water period station coordinates were determined using a combination of radar (Furuno Model CR240) fixes to shore, bathymetric charts and a JRC Model JLE-3850 satellite navigator with a nominal accuracy of 0.1km. All taxonomic classifications have been updated to meet classification standards represented in the International Taxonomy Information System (ITIS) database (www.itis.usda.gov ) as of January 2007.

HORIZONTAL POSITIONAL ACCURACY REPORT: unknown accuracy, but best available method used contact authors or MV Sequel
