Abstract: Bacterial kidney disease, caused by the Gram positive bacterium Renibacterium
salmoninarum, is a serious disease of wild and hatchery reared salmonid fish
species. The disease is especially serious in the Pacific northwest US and in
the Great Lakes region, two foci of intense salmon culture. The bacterium is
