Summary
Abstract: A set of Coral Data from the Pacific relevant to paleoclimate studies is
available via FTP from the World Data Center for Paleoclimatology at NCDC in
Boulder, Colorado USA. See below for access instructions.

This data sheds light on the temporal variability of the equatorial Pacific
upwelling, the Southern Oscillation, and the trade winds. The data provides
past sea surface temperatures. Paleoclimate indicators used include coral
species, geochemical indicators, isotope ratios, and cation ratios.

The data sets comprising this data set are contained in the following
files :
1. ptapitt.dat
Site: Punta Pitt, Isla San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador (0 40'S, 89
10'W). Water depth 14m. Coral species Pavona clavus. Time span: 1936-1982.5
at quarterly resolution (missing data from 1950) File contains data presented
by Shen et al. (1992a). Table includes d18O, d13C, Cd/Ca, Mn/Ca, and Ba/Ca data
from a 2m coral head and, for comparison, SST records from Academy Bay
(Galapagos; 0 40'S, 90 20'W) and Puerto Chicama (Peru; 8 S, 80 W).

2. TARAWA1.DAT
Site: Tarawa Atoll, Republic of Kiribati (1 N, 172 E). Water depth: 2-
4m.
Coral species Hydnophora microconos. Time span: 1959-79 at
monthly resolution.
File contains stable isotope data presented by Cole and Fairbanks
(1990) and Mn/Ca data presented by Shen et al. (1992b).

3. GALAPBA.DAT
Site: Punta Pitt, Isla San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador (0
40'S, 89 10'W).
Water depth 14m. Coral species Pavona clavus. Time span: 1963-82
at quarterly resolution. File contains Ba/Ca data (in mmol/mol)
presented by Lea et al. (1989).
