Collaborative Research: Dynamics and Climatic Response of the Taylor Glacier System

Summary
Abstract: Taylor Glacier is a 60 km long outlet glacier that drains the Taylor Dome
region of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and terminates in Taylor Valley, the
southernmost of the famous Dry Valleys of Victoria Land. Fluctuations of Taylor
Glacier directly impact the Dry Valleys ecosystem and leave a geomorphologic
signature. These fluctuations are driven by climatic changes in Taylor Valley
and on the Taylor Dome region of the ice sheet. The purpose of the proposed
study is (1) to improve understanding of Taylor Glacier dynamics using a
combination of field and modelling studies, (2) to use this information to
analyze theoretically the response of the Taylor Glacier to climate changes,
and (3) to use this framework to gain insight about past and future
fluctuations of the Taylor Glacier terminus and margins.

During 2002/2003 U.Texas and U.C. Berkeley completed our first of two field
seasons on Taylor Glacier. U.C. Berkeley took responsibility for ice motion,
ablation and stable isotope sampling. During 2003/04 UT and U.C. Berkeley
completed the second of our two field seasons on Taylor Glacier. Again, U.C.
Berkeley took responsibility for ice motion, ablation and stable isotope
sampling, starting in early season.
