Glacial and supraglacial lakes in western Dronning Maud Land
Entry ID:
Aboa_lakes
Summary
Abstract:
Glacial and supraglacial lakes have been investigated in western Dronning Maud land, at Basen, Plogen and Fossilryggen nunataks. Data collection was made in austral summers 2004-2005 and 2010-2011, December-January. Physics data include lake profiling by drilling, ice samples, hydraulics, radiation balance and heat budget, and chemistry data includes hydrochemical sounding of water bodies and samples for laboratory analyses. Three supraglacial lakes and six glacial lakes have been mapped; the glacial lakes were small and located at the ice sheet foot and at the top of nunataks. In 2010-2011 also plankton samples were taken for later laboratory analyses.
Purpose: Supraglacial and glacial lakes in the Antarctic ice sheet sensitive to climate variations and can be used to detect climatological changes. They influence on the local radiation balance strongly due to their low albedo and their water bodies are expected to have further thermo-mechanical effects on the ice sheet. These lakes are an extreme environment with limited but existing biota. Temporal Coverage
