Abstract: This is a metadata entry for an NSF-funded project to examine the ice and basal-hydrologic dynamics associated with reversals in the ice/air surface slope. This project, NSF ANT 0814241, was a multi-year (2007-2011) effort directly involving Todd K. Dupont and Richard B. Alley. It was a modeling study which involved simulating (a) the formation of surface-slope reversals in ice-stream/ice-shelf ... systems, and (b) the ability of subglacial lakes to be produced with the help of these reversals. Beyond this, ice/bed hydraulic coupling was examined. In all cases a key premise was that ice/air surface gradient controls the subglacial hydrologic potential, and thus the flow of water beneath the ice. This work has implications for understanding how subglacial lakes, and more ephemeral water pockets, form and evolve, and for assessing coupling between ice and its subglacial lubricant. Gauging the potential for an ice-stream/ice-shelf system to produce outburst floods, was a key motivator for this endeavor. Included here are references of publications resulting from this work.
