Abstract:
Think Quest's Historical GIS provides multiple data sets covering the last 4000
years of history. In addition, we have provided a variety of internet applications of these data, including static images, flash animations, and interactive applications. The data is not very accurate in terms of absolute position, as it is only intended to demonstrate relative positions of nations in history. Purpose: The site is intended for educational use. While it is on a server intended for contest entries, we are continuing to maintain the site even after the contest has ended. The data may be used as a reference to anybody interested in GIS, though it is lacking detail. This data originates from a basic dataset provided by ESRI. As it progresses further into history, the quality/accuracy of the national borders depicted greatly degrades.
