Abstract: Established in 1879, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has Federal
responsibility for preparing multipurpose maps and fundamental
cartographic data to meet the requirements of users throughout the

Purpose: Each year the USGS produces thousands of new and revised topographic
and geologic maps, as well as other types of cartographic products.
To provide easy access to these maps, the USGS publishes indices that
are updated periodically.

through digital cartographic technology. Many of the United States
indices are no longer being updated.
