Current Velocity of Side Channels in the Madison River (Montana) DrainageEntry ID: Velocity_WD
Abstract: Current velocity was measured within each side channel during three separate collection periods in 1999 and 2000. These raw data show the 18 measurements taken along six transects in each side channel.
Purpose: These data were collected as part of a larger study that examined the relationships among characteristics of the environment, Tubifex tubifex populations, and rainbow trout whirling disease risk in the Madison River (Montana).
Relevance of this dataset to fisheries managers: T. tubifex densities were correlated with current velocity; densities were ... higher in channels with slower mean current velocity. Practices such as management of the dam to allow increased spring flow levels to increase the velocity of the river near times of critical rainbow trout spawning and rearing could decrease the infectiveness of M. cerebralis. Application of dataset: Water velocity in the Pine Butte side channel was much higher than in the other side channels. As expected, side channels with higher velocities (e.g., Pine Butte) tended to have lower proportions of fine sediments than those with lower velocities (e.g., South Slide, Lyons Bridge). And, water velocities were negatively correlated to the density of infected T. tubifex.
