Analysis of bottom sediments within the Ross Sea to determine the sedimentation regime of the area
Entry ID:
K008_1972_1973_NZ_2
Summary
Abstract:
The collection of a series of bottom grab samples in the Ross Sea were made over three weeks from the USCGS Northwind. The aim was to study the sedimentation regime in the Ross Sea. 30 grab stations were obtained, one outside the Ross Sea, 23 within a 10 mile radius around each of the three Glomar Challenger sites and 6 in McMurdo Sound. The sample sin the southern Ross Sea around the Glomar Challenger sites contained a green terrigenous mud with variable quantities of erratic pebbles. The results are of particular use in defining the extent of localised variations in sediment type in a glacio-marine environment.
