Abstract:
NOAA's Ocean Atmosphere Carbon Dioxide Exchange Study (OACES) seeks to enhance our understanding of the role of the ocean in sequestering the increasing burden of anthropogenically-derived carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. To do this, OACES scientists quantitatively assess the sources, sinks and pathways of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the oceans. Research involves studies in the direction, rate and amount of carbon dioxide transfer between the atmosphere and the ocean. These studies have been conducted in conjunction with the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) pilot programs in the equatorial Pacific (EQPAC) in 1992, in the Indian Ocean in 1994/95 and in the Southern Ocean. In addition, the OACES program assesses the storage of carbon dioxide in the ocean. This research is being conducted cooperatively with JGOFS on cruises of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE). These WOCE "long line" cruises include two in the Pacific (110W,170W), one in the Atlantic (WOCE line A-16), and two in the Indian Ocean (WOCE lines I-7 and I-8). The WOCE long lines are reoccupied at approximately five-year intervals. Data sets include: surface to bottom CTD casts; rosette-mounted Niskin bottle water sample measurements of salinity, oxygen, nutrients, pCO2, total CO2, total alkalinity, pH, DOC, and 13C and 14C; and, within the upper 200 meters, profiles of light, primary production, chlorophyll, phaeopigments, POM, and integrated thorium activity as an estimate of particulate export.
