Size Fractionated Chlorophyll-a, Primary Productivity and Nutrients off the West Coast of Vancouver Island

Summary
Abstract: On the West Coast of Vancouver Island, physical flow features
directly impact both primary and secondary producer trophic levels and the
coupling between them and the larval fish that prey on them. Primary
productivity is high, supported by the advection of nutrients from deep oceanic
water onto the shelf. This data set is the first part of a process study in the
area and will investigate variability in this transport and the relative
importance of new versus regenerated nutrients to primary production in this
area. The second part of the process study investigates the physical factors
determining zooplankton biomass (secondary productivity) and distribution and
thus impacting on the food web transfer from the abundant phytoplankton to
harvested species of fish. Size fractionated chlorophyll-a and primary
productivity (0.7 um and 5.0um); Nutrients - nitrate, phosphate, and silicic
acid; phytoplantkon taxonomy (major groups only) were measured on 9 cruises:
April, July, October 1997; May, July, October, 1998; May, July, October 1999 on
the west coast of Vancouver Island. Cruise tracks were different on each trip
and over 40 stations were sampled each trip.
