Summary
Abstract: The study of the soils of the Penguin and Leopard Islands, Gerlache Strait,
Antarctic Peninsula, is herewith presented. Utilizing the reconnaissance
methodologies employed by the Institute of Soils of INTA, Castelar, several
landscape units could be differentiated; and soils classified at subgroup
level, with indication of their textural family, according to the last version
of Soil Taxonomy, 1996. The present work shows that, althoungh the climate is
extremely harsh, due to low temperatures, there exist soils which evolve in
this environment. There were recognized soils belonging to the Mollisols,
Histosols and Inceptisols Orders.
