Summary
Abstract: Argo is an internationally coordinated project that plans to deploy a global
array of approximately 3000 sub-surface profiling floats in the period
2000-2006. The objectives of Argo are: (1) to provide an enhanced real-time
capability for measurement of temperature and salinity through the upper 2000 m
of the ocean, (2) to provide in situ data component of the Global Ocean Data
Assimilation Experiment (GODAE), and (3) to contribute to a quantitative
description of the seasonal cycle and interannual variability of the upper
ocean thermohaline circulation and the patterns of ocean climate variability.
It presents an excellent opportunity to improve ocean and climate forecasting,
with consequent benefits for the protection of life and property and effective
planning for the effects of seasonal to inter-annual climate variability.
