Summary
Abstract: The University of South Florida is implementing a real-time Coastal Ocean
Monitoring and Prediction System (COMPS) for West Florida that will provide
additional data needed to give more accurate predictions of ocean storms and
coastal flooding by storm surge.

COMPS consists of an array of instrumentation both along the coast and
offshore, combined with numerical circulation models, and builds upon existing
in-situ measurements and modeling programs funded by various state and federal
agencies. This observing system fulfills all of the requirements of the Coastal
Module of the Global Ocean Observing System (CMGOOS). Data and model products
are disseminated in real-time to federal, state, and local emergency management
officials via the internet (URL "http://comps.marine.usf.edu/"). COMPS is
designed to enable researchers to more accurately predict ocean storms and
coastal flooding caused by storm surges.

As a major component of this system, we are deploying 3 offshore buoys, armed
with current, temperature, salinity, and meteorological sensors, with satellite
telemetry of the data to shore, along the 50-meter isobath.

In summary, the geological monitoring program is designed to measure the
changes and response of nearshore and coastal environments that can be directly
related to the primary driving mechanism - the physical oceanographic data sets
generated by the real-time monitoring program. This provides an unprecedented
opportunity to identify physical mechanisms driving coastal change.

REAL-TIME DATA from the following USF stations is available:

-West Florida Buoy, Central 50-meter isobath (site 22 on map): hourly updates.
-Navy_2 Buoy (site 20 on map): hourly updates.
-Anna Maria (site 23 on map): 12-minute updates.
-Egmont Key (site 24 on map): 6-minute updates.
-Northwest Florida Bay (site 8 on map): hourly updates, ten measurements per
hour.
-Bayboro Harbor (site 25 on map): hourly updates, ten measurements per hour.
Test site at USF - instrumentation and service will vary.
-Homossassa (site 43 on map): hourly updates, ten measurements per hour.
-West Florida South 50m Buoy (site 12 on map): hourly updates, seven
measurements per hour.
