Comparison of the Sedimentary Record of Fire with the Tree-Ring Record Within and Near Giant Sequoia Groves, Sierra Nevada, California
Entry ID:

Summary
Abstract:
The larger Sierra Nevada Global Change Research Program (SNGCRP) seeks to
understand past, present, and possible future changes in Sierran forest structure, composition, and dynamics resulting from changing management practices and anticipated global climate change. Within the larger program, this project ("Comparison of the sedimentary record of fire with the tree-ring record within and near ... ![]() Purpose: APPLICATION OF RESEARCH: Results from this study will improve our understanding of the most important forces shaping Sierran forests--climate and fire--and their effects on forests, thereby improve our ability to predict the consequences of future changes in climate and fire regimes. Specifically, results will help us to test the fire and forest dynamics models being developed as part of the larger Sierra Nevada Global Change Research Program. Those models, in turn, will help managers explore possible consequences of different management actions (such as applying prescribed fires at different frequencies and intensities), and may suggest possible management actions to mitigate the effects of climatic change on forests.
