Summary

Abstract: ABSTRACT: The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) operated the drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution from 1984-2003 for over 100 cruises worldwide. The ODP is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and several countries through the Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling (JOIDES). In 1990, the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) placed most of the core data from legs 101-129 of ... the ODP onto CD-ROM in cooperation with NSF and JOI/JOIDES. In 2001, this CD-ROM was replaced by a new version with anHTML interface. Data included are all of the digital sediment, and hard-rock data collected through Leg 129, including the following data types: Age profile, carbon-carbonate, corelog, gas chromatography, GRAPE special 2-minute counts, hard-rock visual core descriptions, hard-rock thin section descriptions, index properties of sediment, interstitial water chemistry, paleomagnetic susceptibility and intensity, rock evaluator data, sedimentary lithology, site summary, smearslide descriptions, velocity, and x-ray fluorescence data. The ODP CD-ROM set is available online for free download.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: In 1990, ODP began a cooperative project with the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) to place all of the sediment, hard-rock and underway geophysical data collected through Leg 129 onto CDROM for distribution. The CDROM and accompanying software for PC compatible and Macintosh platforms were released by NGDC in April of 1992. The CD-ROM set contains the following data types: Age profile, carbon-carbonate, corelog, gas chromatography, gamma ray attenuation porosity evaluation (GRAPE), GRAPE special 2-minute counts, hard-rock visual core descriptions (fine and coarse fractions), hard-rock thin section descriptions, index properties of sediment, interstitial water chemistry, paleomagnetic susceptibility and intensity, rock evaluator data, sedimentary lithology, site summary, smearslide descriptions, velocity, and x-ray fluorescence data. The 1992 CD-ROM set was replaced in 2001 with a new version. In 2005, a copy of all ODP prime data from the new ODP Janus database for all legs of the ODP (101-210) was archived at NGDC which almost completely replaces this dataset - please see FGDC record G03298 - although some data types are not represented in the new set.
