Abstract: This data set consists of tropical Pacific ODP806B Pleistocene Mg/Ca data and
ODP Hole 806B, Cores 1H through 4H section 2W:
0 deg 19.1' N, 159 deg 21.7' East, 2520m. depth
Mg/Ca data on cleaned G. ruber shells by ICP-MS. 203 individual points from Lea
et al., 2000, and 360 individual points from Medina-Elizalde M. and Lea W. D.,
Data precision: Mg/Ca, ± 2.2%; SST ... (est.), ±0.6°C d18O data on cleaned G.
rubers, 203 individual points from Lea et al., 2000, and 360 individual points
from Medina-Elizalde M. and Lea D., 2005.
SST estimations based on core-top calibration in Lea et al. 2000: SST (deg C)=
Chrono-strat info: conversion of core depth to age based on the visual
alignment of the ODP 806B G. ruber d18O to the ODP 677 G. ruber d18O record.
d18O seawater data calculated by extracting the component in G. ruber d18O
explained by the Mg/Ca derived SST using the low-light paleotemperature
equation by Bemis et al., 1998.
A sea surface temperature (SST) record based on planktonic foraminiferal
magnesium/calcium ratios from a site in the western equatorial Pacific warm
pool reveals that glacial-interglacial oscillations in SST shifted from a
period of 41,000 to 100,000 years at the mid-Pleistocene transition, 950,000
years before the present. SST changes at both periodicities were synchronous
with eastern Pacific cold-tongue SSTs but preceded changes in continental ice
volume. The timing and nature of tropical Pacific SST changes over the
mid-Pleistocene transition implicate a shift in the periodicity of radiative
forcing by atmospheric carbon dioxide as the cause of the switch in climate
periodicities at this time.
