Analysis of Existing Core in the Floridan AquiferEntry ID: USGS_SOFIA_exist_core
Abstract: ABSTRACT: The proposed work was divided into several phases: (1) collection of existing core samples and slab preparation of core samples, (2) lithologic examination, and (3) report preparation
Purpose: PURPOSE: The analysis of existing core samples represents an early-phase task authorized by the regional Aquifer Storage and Retrieval (ASR) Project Management Team. This effort was designed to characterize the lithology, stratigraphy, pore systems, and estimated permeability of the Upper Floridan Aquifer in the Lake Okeechobee area with the aim of predicting zones of preferred flow with the ... aquifer. Relating rock properties derived from core analysis to borehole geophysical log data in specific wells can serve as a comparative guide to the geology in nearby non-cored wells. Core analysis is a tool used in subsurface geologic exploration/exploitation and in the characterization of carbonate aquifers. Some of the parameters that can be obtained through core analysis include porosity, relative permeability, and lithology. The slabbing of core samples is a laboratory procedure used to enhance detailed descriptions of lithologic, paleontologic, and mineralogic information that is obscured by the rough outer core surface.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: This is a completed project; the results are presented in USGS OFR 2003-201. Dr. Renken has retired but remains an emeritus volunteer with USGS and can be reached by email for questions about this project and other technical ASR activities. An additional Point of Contact for this project should Dr. Renken be unavailable is Kevin Cunningham. Respective contact information for each is in the Point of Contact section below.

Quality LOGICAL CONSISTENCY REPORT: For purposes of this investigation and due to time and funding constraints, aquifer test data were obtained from published sources or contained within the files of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and South Florida Water Management District.
COMPLETENESS REPORT: Time constraints provided limited analysis of hydraulic datasets in a limited field study area. No original observational data sets were analytically or numerically reassessed, nor were test limitations and inherent hydraulic test assumptions evaluated. Reported transmissivity values from published and unpublished sources were accepted as being accurate. Open-hole thickness estimates were based on reported casing depths and total depth of wells.
