Summary

Abstract: ABSTRACT: The National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) collects and disseminates information on earthquakes worldwide. Four of the main databases are described below. The earthquake data base (sometimes called hypocenter data files) contains information on approximately 3,000,000 earthquakes for the period 2150 BC through the present. For each event, the file includes where available, the date, ... origin time, geographic location, focal depth, magnitude, and intensity. It contains additional information on the source of the data, quality factors, associated phenomena (tsunami, volcanism, faulting, etc.), and seismic region number. In addition to earthquakes, the file contains phenomena that have surface effects similar to earthquakes, including known or suspected explosions and associated collapse phenomena, coal bumps, rockbursts, quarry blasts and landslides.The significant earthquakes catalog includes information on about 5,000 earthquakes that meet one or more of these criteria: $1 million (1990 dollars) or more damage, at least 10 deaths, magnitude 7.5 or greater, or modified mercalli intensity ''X'' or greater.Given for each earthquake are date and time of occurrence, latitude and longitude, depth, magnitude, number of casualties, damage, references and political geography. In addition to the catalog, more than 1,000 significant earthquakes from 1900 to 1979. The wall map measure 42 x 54 inches. All the data in the catalog and on the map plus more recent data are part of a digital data base. The latest version of the data set may be purchased on magnetic tape or high density floppy diskette. Custom retrievals may also be requested.Historical seismograph station bulletins including more than 400,000 pages from about 500 seismograph station bulletins worldwide (1900- 1965) are available on microfiche.The NGDC archives, and disseminates a computerized collection of earthquake damage and felt reports that have been compiled from various publications, newspaper reports, and special catalogs. The earthquake intensity data file consists of more than 140,000 earthquake intensity observations. The annual serial "United States Earthquakes," which provides substantially 90 percent of the observations, is the principal data source. The earliest observation in the file dates to 1638. The observations have been updated through 1985. Most records in the file contain the date andtime of occurrence and location of the earthquake, magnitude, depth, two-digit state code. name and coordinates of observing city or town, and the observed intensity at each town. The data file serves as the main information source for the preparation of intensity histories that are useful for environmental and hazard impact statements.
