Paleozoic magmatism along the Paleopacific margin of Gondwana: northern Victoria Land (Antarctica) and South Tasman Rise.

Summary
Abstract: The aim of the research is to contribute to the geological reconstruction of the continental fragments around the Paleopacific margin of Gondwana before its break-up. The middle Paleozoic magmatism, which affected most of the presently dispersed fragments, constitutes an important element for testing the correlation among these fragments. Source, tectonic setting and emplacement age of magmas are two relevant aspects for correlation. Because granite morror their source, acquisition of geochemical and Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic data is being carried out togehter with precise Sensitive High Resolution Ion Microprobe (SHRIMP)Th-U-Pb age of zircon. SHRIMP data provided both emplacement ages and inherited components for several plutons. Comparison with magmatism in Tasmania and South Rasman Rise has been carried out. The main objective of the research team is to collect petrologic, geochemical and precise geochronological data on a wide set of Middle Paleozoic granitoids in Northern Victoria Land and South Tasman Rise in order to contribute to the understanding of the geologic evolution of the paleopacific margin of Gondwana. We aim at obtaining a precise defition of the chronology of the Admiralty magmatism in Northern Victoria Land and a better understanding of the evolution of this magmatism in that area and of its relationships with the tectonic setting.
