Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder
Entry ID:
gov.noaa.class.NPP_ATMS
Summary
Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Types of data products: Brightness temp, surface temp, rain rate, sea ice snow cover, TPW, IWP, CLW, and emissivity products
CURRENTNESS REFERENCE: ground condition Data Set ID Format: file_naming_convention_is:_[data_poduct_id]_[spacecraft_id]_[data_start_date]_ [data_start_time]_[data_stop_time]_[orbit_number]__[creation_date]_[origin]_[domain_description].h5 Fees: Electronic download (FTP) of the data is free. There is a fee for copies of data on physical media. Optical disks are $25.00 per unit and magnetic tape is $100 per unit. Price does not include additional service and handling costs. Purpose: PURPOSE: In combination with CrIS, a hyperspectral infrared sounder, ATMS will provide temperature and humidity profile information of sufficient accuracy, even in the presence of many cloud types, to improve further the presently respectable accuracy of operational numerical weather prediction models. ATMS should also extend the time series data on mean global upper air temperatures that began with its predecessor instrument, MSU, over twenty years ago. It will also yield global precipitation-rate retrievals for rain and snow with ~15-km resolution near nadir.
