Profile and Total Ozone and Reflectivity Data from NIMBUS-7 SBUV ( HDSBUV, CPOZ, ZMT-S, PSC)Entry ID: OZ_BN-2
Abstract: This SBUV ozone data set consists of the following products:
HDSBUV -- High Density Tape from SBUV (Level II, NSSDC ID: 78-098A-09D)
CPOZ -- Compressed Ozone Tape (Level II, NSSDC ID: 78-098A-09Q)
ZMT-S -- Zonal Means Tape for SBUV (Level III, NSSDC ID: 78-098A-09K)
PSC -- Polar Stererographic Contours Tape (Level III, NSSDC ID: 78-098A-09W)
The temporal ... coverages include CPOZ (10/31/78-06/21/90), HDSBUV
(01/21/79-06/21/90), ZMT-S (10/31/78-02/12/87), and PSC (11/07/78-09/30/86).
As of 3/14/95, the Goddard Space Flight Center Distributed Active
Archive Center (GSFC DAAC) distributes ONLY the HDSBUV and CPOZ data
The ZMT-S and PSC data are still housed at the National Space Science
Data Center (NSSDC - http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/earth/)
All data products provide global earth coverage from 80N to 80S with a
horizontal resolution of 200 x 200 km. Vertically, the ozone profiles
are produced from measurements taken at 19 pressure levels form 100 to
0.3 mbar. Data are available three out of four days from November
1978 to mid 1983, and then continuous afterwards. Beginning February
13, 1987, the SBUV instrument developed chopper synchronization
problems that render results unsuitable for long-term ozone trend
The HDSBUV data product contains (1) earth-located total ozone (in
Dobson units, with and without IR cloud height information), (2)
reflectivity measured mainly by the 339.8-nm channel, (3) ozone mixing
ratios (microgram/g), and (4) layer ozone amounts (Dobson units) for
12 layers: 0-0.24, 0.24-0.49, 0.49-0.99, 0.99-1.98, 1.98-3.96,
3.96-7.92, 7.92-15.8, 15.8-31.7,31.7-63.3, 63.3-127, 127-253, and
253-1013 mb. There are also solar zenith angle information, a data
quality flag, and a volcanic contamination index included with these
data. Each HDSBUV tape archived at the Goddard DAAC normally covers a
year's worth of data.
The CPOZ data product is a condensed version of the HDSBUV and is
designed to be the most convenient SBUV product for investigators.
All CPOZ tape archived at the Goddard DAAC normally covers one year of
The ZMT-S contains daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal averages of
total ozone and mixing ratios for 10-deg latitude zones. There is one
1600 bpi tape per year.
The PSC tapes contain daily and monthly averages of total ozone and
mixing ratio contours at 30, 10, 5, 2, 1, and 0.4 mbar. The data were
abstracted from CPOZ and were gridded in NMC (National Meteorological
Center) 65 x 65 rectangular array in a polar stereographic projection.
Each tape normally covers one year of data; data are available through
The same algorithms that were used to process HDSBUV, CPOZ and ZMT-S
tapes were also used to reprocess the Nimbus-4 BUV data. Together
SBUV and BUV ozone form a continuous data set from 1970.
