Summary
Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The GOME-2 total ozone retrieval algorithm is based on OMI/TOMS (Ozone Monitoring Instrument / Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer) V8 algorithm, which is a three-step process of successive estimation improvement. The algorithm uses a pair of wavelengths 331nm and 318nm (340nm and 331nm for high solar zenith angle) to derive total ozone and surface reflectivity. It first calculates N-value ... at the pair of wavelengths using input radiance/irradiance from GOME-2 level 1b data. With its geo-reference information, such as latitude, longitude, solar zenith angle, etc., the measured N-value is compared with pre-calculated N-value to derive the step-one total ozone and reflectivity. The pre-calculated N-value is generated by using a forward radiative transfer model. In order to obtain step-two ozone, the profiles of ozone and temperature climatologies are then applied at all levels to account for seasonal and latitudinal variations in profile shape. In the last step, the step-two ozone estimation is modified to correct for wavelength dependent effects (tropospheric aerosol and sun glint) and local upper level profile shape effects. The algorithm writes out all the retrieval variables and corresponding geo-referenced information to a Product Master File (PMF) at the end of each scan process. The PMF files are available in sequential binary format for each three minute granule. CURRENTNESS REFERENCE: ground condition Electronic download (FTP) of the data is free. There is a fee for copies of data on physical media. Optical disks are $25.00 per unit and magnetic tape is $100 per unit. Price does not include additional service and handling costs.

ATTRIBUTE ACCURACY REPORT: Accuracy is estimated to be 1%. Product is made with near-real time data, using the best calibration available at the time. No reprocessing is done by NOAA with the GOME-2 instrument stream. LOGICAL CONSISTENCY REPORT: OSDPD compares GOME-2 total ozone against results from SBUV/2. Time series plots and zonal mean comparisons are ... checked daily. STAR monitors the residuals and error flag populations, and makes comparisons against the Total Ozone Dobson Station comparisons, and compares again the OMI total ozone results. COMPLETENESS REPORT: Granules are not made on the dark side of the orbit. Ifthe 1B data is not received in a timely manner from EUMETSAT. No post processing is done after the data is no longer useful to near-realtime users. LINEAGE/PROCESS STEP: PROCESS DESCRIPTION: GOME-2 level 1b total ozone retrieval process receives 1b granules from Svalbard Near Real-Time system and generates one product master file (PMF) for each input granule data file. Graphics are generated for the GOME webpage, and the granules are also produced in BUFR (Binary Universal Form for the Representation of meteorological data) for environmental modeling centers, but are not archived.The granule processing is run through OPUS which automatically runs GOME-2 processing when a new GOME-2 level 1b granule is available on the system.
