Firn permeability at sites in West Antarctica
Entry ID: WAIS_Permeability

Summary
Abstract: This data set lists the measured snow and firn density and permeability at
sites in West Antarctica. The measurements were done on consecutive ten-
centimeter sampling in snow pits and from firn cores down to approximately
fifteen meters depth. The site locations are as follows:

Siple Dome
US-ITASE 99-1 80o 36' S, 122o 28' E
US-ITASE 99-2 81o 11' S, 125o 54' E
US-ITASE 00-1 79o 23' S, 111o 14' E
US-ITASE 00-4 78o 5' S, 120o 5' W
US-ITASE 00-5 77o 41' S, 124o W
US-ITASE 01-3 78.1oS , 95.6o W
US-ITASE 01-5 77.1oS, 89.1o W

All except the Siple Dome site were conducted as part of the US-ITASE traverse
in West Antarctica.

The permeability measurements were made with a custom air permeameter. Pit
measurements of approximately the top two meters were conducted at many of the
above sites. Firn core permeability measurements were made in the laboratory
at CRREL (Hanover, N.H.) using a flexible membrane holder that confomed to the
(possibly irregular) sides of the firn core samples. For the firn core
measurements, density was calculated as the mass per unit volume of the
increments of the same firn core samples, using the measured weight of the
sample. Density measurements in the field were made in pits, using consecutive
100 cc sampling down through the 2m pits.

The Siple Dome permeability profile is discussed in: Albert, M.R., E. Shultz,
F. Perron, 2000. Snow and Firn Permeability Measurements at Siple Dome,
Antarctica. Annals of Glaciology, vol. 31, p. 353-356.

Permeability of site US-ITASE 00-1 is discussed in: Rick, U., and M.R. Albert,
2004. Microstructure and Permeability in the Near-Surface Firn Near a
Potential U.S. Deep Drilling Site in West Antarctica. Annals of Glaciology, in
press.

Additional publications on all of the measurements are in preparation.
