Summary
Abstract: CABIN is a collaborative programme developed and maintained by
Environment Canada to establish a network of reference sites available to all
users interested in assessing the biological health of fresh water in Canada.

Purpose: The purpose of environmental assessment and management is ultimately
the maintenance of biological integrity. Bioassessment methods use living
organisms to provide insight into environmental conditions. Several different
biotic groups have been used in bioassessment, but one of the most useful
groups are the benthic (bottom-dwelling) invertebrates, which include mayflies,
freshwater shrimps, stoneflies, caddis flies and worms.
