Predicting contaminant impacts at Lake Vanda, Antarctica

Summary
Abstract: Samples of water, phytoplankton, sediment, soil and bacterial mat were sampled from Lake Vanda and the old Vanda station site, in order to determine the fate of trace metal contaminants and their possible interaction with microbial organisms. The study was carried out over two seasons; summer 1995/96 and 1996/97. Water samples had the pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and H2S concentration measured on site, and were later analysed for trace metals and major ions. Lake column profiles were taken from 5 sites at Lake Vanda. Suspended sediment from the lake was also analysed for trace metals. Microbial mat samples were taken from the shallows of the lake and from the Onyx River waters and analysed with electron microscope. Soil profiles were dug to the suprapermafrost layer at five sites in Greywater gully, two helicopter pads and two control sites. For soils, conductivity, pH, soil moisture content, hydrocarbons and trace metals were determined.
